TOMORROW (WEDNESDAY) Batteau Festival in all its lovely quaint glory comes to the town nearest us, Scottsville, 2-7pm, Free

Batteaux (plural of batteau) were large, flat, shallow bodied boats used predominantly in this area for shipping tobacco down the James and have had an ardent following amongst the citizen-historians who live among us. Lynchburg–my hometown–is the starting point for the James River Batteau Festival, in which reenactors and enthusiasts float batteaux they have made down the James to Richmond. It takes over a week and is real fun for those involved. Every night they camp at different points along the James and have a party with old-time music, and assorted activities. Elizabeth Schoenborn, the volunteer coordinator for the Scottsville Batteau Festival, asked us to do a post on the Scottsville festivities tomorrow and, since I’m from Lynchburg, I felt obliged to do it, despite it not happening in Charlottesville.

Below is the poster for the event. Main Street Scottsville is real easy to get to: if you take Avon St. (main road running by the Pavilion) out of town, that turns into Route 20. If you stay on Route 20 for about half an hour that becomes Main St. Scottsville. It’s a beautiful little town, and the Canal Basin Square is right off Main St. The landing is just a little farther down and I assume the batteaux will be lined up all along the river. They’ll be all sorts of activity, exhibits, vendors, etc., and looks to be free. If you’re looking for something to do, this could be fun!
