dTonight is “From Africa to Appalachia”– a cool-looking concert tracing the development of the five-string banjo from its West African ancestors, the n’gonia and kora. From the press release:

It is now indisputable that what we now know as the banjo was derived from the lutes brought by enslaved Africans to the New World, most notably the West African n’goni and kora. […] From Africa to Appalachia will take the n’goni and the banjo full circle, bringing together Grammy-nominated Master Malian Griot Cheick Hamala Diabate with Sammy Shelor […]

I’m excited to see my first show at the Jefferson School Center. The show is “produced by the Virginia Folklife Program at the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, in partnership with the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center and WTJU.”

The Jefferson School is the newly renovated city arts and recreation center located directly across the street from Staples, on the 11th St. side, not the Ridge/McIntyre side. Show starts at 8pm and is $12-15 Embedded below is Cheick Hamala Diabate’s NPR Tiny Desk concert:

Friday is an exciting rock/hardcore show at the Main Street Annex, located caddy-corner from Sidetracks. Very exciting to see on the bill is Nurse Beach, a Richmond hardcore band formed a few years back from member of St. Gods. I haven’t seen them on a Charlottesville bill in a few, so it’s good to see them in town. Bound to put on a visceral performance. Also on the bill is Charlottesville’s heavy rock outfit Sharkopath, always providing full-throttle jams. Don’t know much about Crab Action or Que Va, but seeing four bands for $8 sounds like a good deal. All ages, doors at 9pm.

Below is a Nurse Beach video from a few years back. It highlights my ability to go into “Deep Youtube” but also highlights why it’s great to do so. People, please enjoy Nurse Beach’s “Bad Romance” cover featuring Chloe Sky Delaney on hardcore vocals..she’s amazing!! Also featuring a thrashing/seasick camera operator.

Nurse Beach is not playing tonight. They were originally on the bill, but had to drop off a few weeks ago.
