TONIGHT: Stephen Steinbrink, Erik the Red, Erik “the DEN” DeLuca — Tea Bazaar, 9pm

Really great show tonight at Tea Bazaar. An extremely varied line-up in the best of ways.

Stephen Steinbrink is a kindly cherub of a person, containing all the great elements of a traveling musician in the 21st century: idiosyncratic songwriting, sincere performances, a warm, social disposition and killer merch. I would not be surprised if sometimes people came to his performances just to check out the petite craft wonders Stephen produces. Arranged Waves came out last year and his discography is large, but Stephen is more a touring species which makes this show all the more enticing. His style reminds me of a more confident Andrew Cedermark, a boppy sort of 70s country revival channeled through rock. I’m having trouble linking to the Arranged Waves bandcamp site to stream, but below is a video I found with one of his tracks:

Charlottesville is countering with their own nice guys doing solo acts. DEN is a sonically luscious project from UVA music grad student Erik DeLuca, who recently did a great improv performance with Adam Smith at The Bridge. Erik chops and screws samples, then complements them with a stoner-industrial aural pallette to create surprisingly emotional pieces. Reminds me of Evenings meets Burial with a bit more good. It plays great and he’s also able to recreate the effect live while maintaining spontaneity. Head-nodding tracks are below and highly recommended for a listen. Really glad Erik is playing out and hope he continues to do so!

Last but certainly not least is Charlottesville’s strongest nomination for Nicest Person on the Planet, Erik the Red. Looks like he’ll be performing his country-crooner tunes solo tonight. If you haven’t seen Erik play before it’s something you must do. He is the real thing.

Show starts at 9pm, $7 door, tell Adam Smith nailgun sent ye.

Amazing show! I’d pay $7 to see any one of these acts again.
