Appalachia’s Best Mess: Noise Tonight at Magnolia, 9PM

is conventional creativity getting you down? are you tired of saying, ‘it was fine, but only if it were a bit……stranger’? well, friends, do i have a deal for you. say ‘fuck yourself’ to everything familiar and come out to see real far-out experimental music. tonight’s show brings local musicians who provide high quality, too. it’s not like going to hear that brooklyn noise band that’s doing all the jams the kids like to hear up in the williamsburg. no, my friends, this is that home-grown weirdness. that pure jam. down home avante-garde filth that fucks your shit up real good.

nathan bowles and scott verrastro released Polar Satellites on the london-based MIE label in July. it’s an extension of bowles’ drone work in Pelt and verrastro’s in the psych-collective Kohoutek: mostly acoustic percussion improvisations on material struck, gonged, bowed and otherwise lovingly mistreated. bowles also plays appalachia old-time with the Black Twig Pickers and his negotiating between old-time and experimental holds something profound. stream tracks off their album here

tyler magill and davis salisbury make up grand banks as they go along. davis’ guitar work reminds me of solo fred frith and if tom waits’ character in Down by Law played electric piano, it would probably sound like tyler magill playing electric piano. they are the main steadfast as far as local live experimental jams go, so seeing them at magnolia is a real good match-up.

ken’s last ever radio extravaganza is also a local stellar shine. ken usually does these improvised sound collages live on WTJU and new york’s WTJU (aka WFMU). he also occasionally performs them as live shows. this performance will pull dual duty: ken is streaming it online here. not sure whether this will incorporate live elements like his radio show typically does, but there is only one way to find out.

magnolia is usually donation (hence the $5? on the poster). this is an opportunity to see some great music in a way you really can’t anywhere else in the country tonight. email magnolia.cville(at)gmail(dot)com for directions, show starts at 9pm.

Thanks for the write-up! Frith has consumed, chewed up, and digested more great music than I will ever get around to, but I am honored by the comparison.

Although for a while I was trying to get Davis to refer to himself as Fred Froth.
