6/28 Friday Night Fight…

Hey I know we have a tradition of posting about shows five hours before they happen but I’d like to make sure y’all have plenty of time to make a very tough decision about where you’re gonna be on Friday night.

In the red corner we have Dwight Howard Johnson’s LP release party, where you can pick up this bad boy. It’s definitely an edgier sound than the pop-punk soung of their previous bandcamp releases, always a welcome change in my book, and the idea of being able to spin “Expected Results” (#1 hit song of the summer) on vinyl come Friday has me working up a sweat. (I know “pop-punk” seems to be a much maligned label to slap onto bands these days, so lets just agree that DHJ play nothing but hits 24/7). They’ll be joined by Weird Mob, the Hibernator Gigs house band, and Challenger. @ The Southern / Doors 8:00 / $10

In the Blue Corner we have Gross Ghost¬†from the research triangle down in North Carolina. Listen to their music and you’ll find a folk-inspired pop act that does a great job of writing dreamy delicate pop songs that don’t sound overtly “soft.” They’ve been on a mini-tour with RVA’s White Laces, a band I caught a year and a half ago and they absolutely blew my mind. Their releases have been changing over the months that have passed so I’m very excited to see what band they’ve become. Rounding out the bill are Left & Right, who are in the middle of testing out new material at the Tea Bazaar so they can eventually record in October. You’ll hear some stuff that might not ever be played again, make the most of it. @ Tea Bazaar / Doors 8:30 / $5

Both these shows are gonna be winners. Go support good music!
