Richard Buckner

Tonight at The Southern, we are blessed with a particularly great show.  Brooklyn’s Richard Buckner will be playing, and you will not want to miss his set.  Thought frequently slapped with the “Alt-Country” label, he is infinitely more enjoyable than your average Ryan Adams or Josh Ritter.  The unique thing about Buckner is that he doesn’t shy away from unique and seemingly inappropriate arrangements of his songs, using (but never over-using and abusing) loop pedals, keyboards and synths, percussion, and non-traditional methods of amplification.  His two records recorded for MCA (Devotion + Doubt and Since) display such methods prominently, though his most recent album, Our Blood (Merge), has returned to a more stripped down acoustic style. Seriously, folks, this IS NOT your average “Alt-Country” crap. This is really, really, good stuff, his songs managing to be simultaneously bleak and funny. I seriously recommend you check this out. Local boy Ned Oldham (yes, THAT Oldham family) opens.

Tonight at The Southern . Doors at 7 . FIFTEEN bucks .
