GULL and Jenny Besetzt at the Tea Bazaar / L&R, Gold Spur & DHJ at Para Coffee / Dum Dums giveaway

GULL is playing at the Tea Bazaar tonight, which is always a cause for celebration. Nate is a former member of Richmond proggy-hardcore bands Ultra Dolphins and Snack Truck, who’s now struck out on his own remarkable solo project. He plays groovy, start-stop riffs and chants, reminiscent of Lightning Bolt or USAisaMonster, and he gets better every time I hear him play. Also, he plays the guitar and a drum kit and sings simultaneously, which would just be a fun gimmick except that he’s really fucking good at it and kind of fascinating to watch.

Jenny Besetzt is also on the bill; she (they?) are from Greensboro and do good indie-rock. I know them more by association/reputation than by firsthand experience with their material, but I get the sense that it’s very good and I’m excited to check it out tonight.

The show was supposed to happen last Friday but both bands had to reschedule due to CMJ, so it’s happening tonight at the Tea Bazaar. (There was a third band on the bill, but I believe they’ve now dropped off…) Doors are at 9, and the cover is… $7? Can that be right? A little steep, but I think it’s worth it.

There’s also a show at Para Coffee on Elliewood; never been to a show there before (actually, since I’m not a caffeinator, I haven’t been there at all), I’d be curious to see how it goes. At least the bands are solid; three local acts, Left & Right, Gold Spur, and Dwight Howard Johnson. All are good, and the three playing together should make for a fun evening.  The show’s at 7pm and the cover is $5.

Also, I’m very excited for tomorrow’s Dum Dum Girls show at the Southern, and I hope you are too. You have a chance to win a pair of tickets by emailing us with “Dum Dum” in the subject line; we’ll randomly select a winner by tomorrow afternoon!
