interesting Tea Bazaar show

I just heard yesterday about a show at the Tea Bazaar tonight; I’m not familiar with any of the folks playing, but several rad people have spoken highly of it, and the descriptions sound interesting. The acts are all apparently related to / feature members of Devil Music Ensemble (the Boston group who have done a lot of cool film scoring stuff) and Debo Band (who have a new album on Sub Pop — with cover art by Julie Mehretu, no less!).

The groups playing tonight are Berbere Superstar, who play “Electric violin over electronic dance beats, traditional Ethiopian and Tanzanian music samples, handheld recordings from Africa, with psychedelic video backgrounds” — something called B Woo, which is “Laptop processed ambient/drone lap steel guitar music” — and a 5 piece rock band called Wilder Maker.  It definitely sounds like something that’s worth checking out; again, I don’t have that much info on it, but I believe it’s starting at 9 and costs $5 or so.

Also this evening at The Bridge, there’s an installation piece as part of Audio September. The fancytalk on that one says: “Multiple award-winning composer and media artist Adam Basanta explores perceptual and affective states through combining sound and light media architecture within the gallery space.  Basanta’s Room Dynamics will activate The Bridge gallery through 9/26, coloring and shading the experimental space through which the spectator navigates.” That starts this evening at 9pm, and I think they’ll be asking for a $5 donation there as well.

I can attest, having seen Jonah and Brendan (B Woo) many times in various bands etc., that these guys are great musicians, not just good. Really interesting and talented guys who bring a lot to the instruments they play. Long history of playing here in Charlottesville as well. Both are old friends of Colin Langenus of USAisaMonster/CSC Funk Band/Colin L Orchestra, so go see them!

That’s basically all the info! $5 at the door. The bitburger flows free at the Tea House!

I believe Colin Langenus is actually getting married in VA this weekend, so there’s lots of the old school crew in town right now, which is cool.

also: apparently there’s a Grits & Gravy at Mono Loco tonight? first I’ve heard of it was about an hour ago.
