Fire Tapes at Black Market, Sarah White at the Southern

It’s late in the day, so here’s the quick & dirty write-up for tonight:

The Fire Tapes are playing at the Black Market Moto Saloon. They’re one of my favorite groups in town; they play dreamy indie-rock of the Yo La Tengo / Galaxie 500 / Cowboy Junkies / Dream Syndicate variety; a little bit country, a little bit shoegazer, etc. Todd tells me they might be debuting some new songs tonight, so I’m eager to hear those. They’re playing with a group (from Richmond, I think?) called Canary Oh Canary, who sound like a good match. That starts at 9pm, cover’s $5.

There’s also a notable show at the Southern; The Futurebirds (beloved by many, though unheard by me) are playing, and Sarah White, the best folk/rock/country-er around, is opening. (Her backing band the Pearls aren’t listed in any of the promo, but I’m fairly sure she’s playing with a full band tonight, not just a solo set). There’s also something called White Violet on the program; I’m fairly sure that’s a solo performer from Athens? Tickets for that are $10 and the doors open at 8:00, with music starting probably around 9pm.

Also, the Nirvana tribute night is tomorrow, so start getting your Courtney Love costumes ready!
