Man Forever (Kid Millions from Oneida!) at the Southern

I’m really excited about tonight’s show at The Southern; it’s a new project by the drummer from Oneida, who are easily one of the best and most interesting experimental rock groups around. This project, Man Forever, has been described as “punk-infused Metal Machine Music for drums,” which sounds awesome. He’s playing with a different ensemble of local musicians for every date on the tour; tonight’s backing musicians are Mike Gangloff and Nathan Bowles (who you might know from their bluegrass/rootsy group Black Twig Pickers, but they’ve also played experimental drone stuff in Pelt and Spiral Joy Band) as well as Mark Shue and John Harouff (two musical names that sound vaguely familiar to me, but sadly I’m not able to place them).

Here’s what I wrote about it for the C-Ville (scroll down to the 2nd part of the article, in which I recount the tale of first hearing Oneida at Tokyo Rose in 2002), and here’s a video of what the Man Forever project sounds / feels like:

Great Dads (aka Adam Smith and Steve Snider; haven’t heard them play together in a while, excited to hear what they’re up to these days) and the Plums (a group I’m not familiar with) are opening. Doors at 8pm, show at 9:00, $8 cover.

John Harouff is John from the Cinnamon Band and, more closely related to the kinda thing that will happen tonight, the great Staunton teen sensations (though they were good enough to escape any designation “teen” may have for you) The Union of a Man and a Woman. Also of note is that the very cool writer/critic Marc Masters plays in The Plums, along with I believe a guitarist shared with Kohoutek/Insect Factory, which should give you an idea of what to expect.

So, an all around cool night to be had. Plus Tyler booked this show, so if you wanna keep him from pacing nervously all night like in the days of old and worrying if anyone will show, tell all your friends to show up and pack the place so that he can relax and enjoy the show.
