tons of shows tonight!

There was a film screening at PVCC this afternoon that sounded really interesting, but it happened at 12:30pm, which is waaaay earlier than I usually get around to blogging, so sorry about that. Hope some of y’all caught it!

Anyway, here’s the concerts happening tonight, which you still have plenty of time to make it to:

Local legends Horsefang have reunited, playing only their third show in the past 3 years; I’m not sure if Nicholas is still backed by Jared and Aaron, but I’m sure they’re still playing some of the finest instrumental sludge-metal dirges I’ve heard. Most of the local metal / hard rock bands these days seem to be doing spacey sci-fi themed stuff, but these guys are more into a Cormac McCarthy kind of vibe (example song title: “River of Dead Horses”); highly recommended for fans of the post-heroin Earth records, or the first Bohren und der Club of Gore album. They’re playing with Valkyrie, a similarly killer metal band from Harrisonburg; the show’s at the Black Market Saloon, with a $5 cover and music around 10 or 10:30.  Does anyone know if shows at Black Market are 21?

The Southern is hosting two groups from Athens; Reptar and Quiet Hooves, both of whom are part of the scene that spawned the epic, overwhelmingly excellent, recently disbanded Dark Meat (as one young Athenian once told me, “everyone who played rock in Athens in the 90’s was part of Elephant Six; everyone who played rock in Athens in the 00’s ended up playing in Dark Meat.”) Quiet Hooves have actually played here a few times before, opening for DM; Reptar I haven’t heard, but I have heard tales of them covering Prince’s “Dirty Mind” (surely the most perfect Prince album!) in its entirety at legendary Athens house parties. (Reptar were actually supposed to play here at the Tea House back in February, but that show got canceled, so if you missed ’em then you can catch ’em now.) Tickets are $10, the door’s at 9:00.

There’s also a worthwhile show at the Tea Bazaar; Oh So is the most recent project of JJ Williams (formerly JDavyd Williams, born David Allen), ex-member of the Basement Bhaktis and several cville goth bands of the 90’s, whose new bands and personal name changes I’m kind of having a hard time keeping track of. Oh So is reportedly a gloomy synth-pop/punk thing, which I’ve heard compared to Gary Numan (never a bad thing!). They’re playing with the Rock & Roll Cannibals, Charlottesville’s finest horror-themed rockabilly band (actually they’re Charlottesville’s only rockabilly band, but they’re still actually really, really good). Third band on the bill is Fire Bison, about whom I don’t know nuthin.’  Doors at 9pm, cover’s $5.

I’ll be out of town for the weekend, but hopefully I’ll still find time to check in and keep y’all updated; but just to be on the safe side, be sure to check our sidebar calendar!

The most perfect Prince album is The Rainbow Children, followed closely by 1-800-NEW-FUNK.
