All-Star Benefit at the Jefferson

Tonight’s big event is a Benefit show at the Jefferson, with a fantastic line-up of great local acts.  It’s a benefit for Rob and Dana Leonard; the Jefferson explains: “Rob has been our friend and Box Office Manager for years and married Dana in September. While snorkeling on the last day of their honeymoon in Belize, a water taxi struck them both in shallow water. Both Rob & Dana incurred major injuries leading to several operations, physical, therapy and the loss of Rob’s right leg. While they are fortunate enough to have insurance (& their lives), the circumstances are still providing significant financial challenges.” I don’t know Rob and Dana personally, but everyone I’ve spoken to speaks well of them, and I’m saddened to hear of their terrible accident.

The happy part of the story is that their friends and coworkers have rallied around them to put together a spectacular benefit show, and the line-up is a particularly solid one: highly acclaimed (by us, especially) country/folk/rockers Sarah White and the Pearls, local classic/garage-rock powerhouse the Cinnamon Band, the Adam Brock’s Borrowed Beams of Light power-pop supergroup, and austere country-folk troubadour Bobby St. Ours, with between-band sets by my DJ buddies in the Grits & Gravy Soul & Funk Revue.  It’s pretty rare to find a five-band bill here in town where all the bands are both local and really excellent and each worth seeing on their own; all together it adds up to a pretty promising evening.

The cover charge is $15, which ain’t bad for 5 bands; also: “Jefferson Staff, as well as all artists/bands, are volunteering their time and wages so that we can provide 100% of all monies directly to the Leonard family. Any and all donations are welcome.” Danny adds: “please note the show is $15, but it is set up as a “Pay what you can” at the box office… I don’t want a $15 cover to scare anyone away!” Anyhow, it’s good music for a good cause, so you’ve got nothin’ to complain about. (I think they’re also going to have a bunch of raffle prizes; I gave ’em a pair of Vinegar Hill tickets, but I have no idea what the other prizes are.) I also have no idea what the band order is or what time it starts, but everything there tonight is worth hearing, so if you’re there between 8:30 and Midnight-ish, you basically can’t go wrong.

There’s also a show at the Tea Bazaar which may catch your interest; Secret Mountains and Elephant Child. They’ve each played around these parts and bunch of times in the past, and I’ve enjoyed both their sets. You may have seen an early listing which also included The Demon Beat on the bill, but I’ve verified that it’s just Secret Mountains and Elephant Child tonight.  Doors around 9ish, cover’s $5. if you don’t make it to that show tonight, be sure to check ’em out next time!

Pretty sure the order is as follows: Bobby St. Ours, Sarah White, Cinnamon Band, Borrowed Beams. Show should start around 7:30 and wrap up sometime around 12:00.
