changes at magnolia

There is still more information coming out on this subject but here’s what’s been pieced together so far. After August 14, Magnolia will no longer host house shows, according to Dylan Mulshine who has been running the music programming there for the past several months. He didn’t go into many details, other than saying it’s a complicated situation and he doesn’t want to deal with the drama. I think anyone could tell at a glance it is indeed very difficult and complicated trying to organize such a hefty and varied calendar of music with little help. It takes a lot of time and effort to do such a thing.

Speaking of effort, I think Dylan’s done a great job bringing exciting things to town and I have enjoyed the presence of Magnolia House for the past what…like, two years? It’s had a good run. I’m sad to see it go and part of me hopes this cessation is temporary even though Dylan has indicated it is permanent.

UPDATE from James: many more details have emerged, we should clarify that the Magnolia House definitely WILL still be having shows! There are plenty of other folks there who have been an integral part of putting music together there, and they will continue to do that. It’s just that Dylan will not be booking shows there now (presumably, he will be booking them somewhere else, and/or moving to Cleveland.) We apologize for bringing everyone’s living-situation drama into our music news!

Also, there is in fact a show at Magnolia TONIGHT, with Coughing Fit, Dry Spell, Drug Money, and apparently some sort of collaboration between those last two bands, referred to as Drug Spell. There’s a few upcoming dates on the calendar as well, including one which I’ve just added and one whose info I’ve just corrected. Maurine from Magnolia adds: “We will keep having shows forever”

many props and much respect to dylan.

yeah, Charlottesville always needs outgoing individuals who can make things happen in weird spaces, for the types of bands who are never gonna be able to book a show at a bar, restaurant or stadium; much respect is due to Dylan for making things happen there for as long as he did. where are the last-minute noise-band shows gonna happen now?!?!?

Also, I certainly don’t intend to be a gossip or to make anyone’s private business public, but it’s my understanding that this is due to Dylan’s departure from the house itself, and whatever interpersonal is going on between him and the current residents (I don’t have the details, and certainly it wouldn’t be appropriate to speculate on such stuff in this forum)….

BUT I am curious about there will still be music at the house in Dylan’s absence; I know people like Andy and Maurine had a hand in putting together a few things there, and outside bookers like Jacob occasionally brought them a band; will this still happen? for instance, Dan Sebring just emailed me about a punk show there on the 23rd… is that one still on? or is Dylan’s departure literally the end of an era, the cessation of all music a the house one way or another?

dylan was saying the last show is on 8/14 and he’s planning on moving to cleveland. future plans at the house are up in the air but if music does happen in the future, he’s not the one who will running things. we’ll see what happens i guess.

this is just not true. magnolia will continue having shows. dylan will not be booking them.

also, as a point of clarification and to recognize other people’s effort, lots of folks have done a lot of work to book shows and make our house what it is.

    dear doods and doodettes,

this whole thing is definitely a bummer for me. specifics aren’t very important. BUT… Sarah said in the post the house was over : to clarify : all that is over is my part in the house. The house definitely has future shows that will see fruition. Just nothing to do with any sort of epoch my I brought. I have much respect for all of my former housemates and hope they can continue being happy. I’m glad that this flower was in my life! oh yeah, there was a tentative show on the 14th of august : but this has been moved to august 10th : and will not be at [Magnolia address removed –ed] : details of where this show will be and who the secret stars are will be announced in the immediate future.

information from dylan was included in the post. it’s good that more info has come out when it was made to sound as though shows were stopping entirely. cool ya jets.

indeed. I am grateful for the things Dylan has done, and I am also grateful that the other folks are going to keep working to make shows happen.
