flag day function

{NOTE: this post never saw print due to a power outage, but just for posterity, here was what Sarah wrote up for the show on Saturday… РJames}

My fingers are red and numb from knotting balloons but I’m going to try my hand at typing anyways.

Today is the day of the FLAG DAY FUNCTION at Al Hamraa that Claibourne and I have been planning for some time now. Function itself implies a laundry list of disparate activities–all of them fun–orbiting around a theme based on what is perhaps the most neglected of all patriotic holidays. So here goes that list: costume contest, photo booth, goodie bags, weezer cover band, and perhaps a limbo contest. We can’t observe on actual flag day because that is Tuesday and we wanted to make this a real party. Fortunately, very few people know when exactly Flag Day occurs.

The idea here was to encourage people to make a costume inspired by a flag of any nation, principality, state or organization, etc–real or fictional. The winner gets their utilities paid (this excludes your cell phone and cable bill.) If you don’t have utility bills, we’ll probably just give you $100.

If that wasn’t enough, it is also the debut of TEEZER, a Weezer cover band featuring Greg Sloane and Drew Carroll of Infinite Jets, Dave Gibson of the Hilarious Posters, and Thomas Dean of ORDER, THE HAND, ETC. DJ Murder Mark of Richmond will be djing when they are not playing. Amidst music, we have hired a 16 year old to take pictures of you under the balloon arch I built out of PVC pipes. My hands are actually about to fall off from knotting balloons.

So! come by! It will be fun.
