another one of those nights where everything happens at once.

{UPDATE: Whoa, OK, apparently everything changed up at the last minute. I’m going through and crossing-out and updating show-by-show, with the newer info in brackets and in italics. Hope I can keep all this info straight…}

Truly our blessings have the flavor of curses today, for there are a great many great shows that are all happening at once this evening, and we will each be forced into a Sophie’s Choice-style difficult decision. However, the choice you make will most likely result in you seeing a good concert, rather than one of your children dying, so I’d think that’s far more preferable.

The big Touring Band show tonight is Times New Viking, the fuzzed-out low-fi indie-scuzz-pop band whom I’m sure many of you know and love (way to go for scoring that one, Jacob!). They are unapologetically noisy but also charming and catchy in a way that’s really grown on me. They’re playing at Trinity Bar on the Corner, and in fact they’re about to play a live set on WTJU in the next two hours! (between 2 and 4pm, that is). So tune in to 91.1FM to catch that, and also for your last chance to win Tickets to tonight’s show. {UPDATE: it’s 3pm, and I just heard Dave say on air that they’re still awaiting the arrival of the band; let’s hope they make it to the studio before 4} {UPDATE Part 2: the band never showed up to the WTJU studio this afternoon… or at least if they did, they never made it into the air. No idea what the story is there, but let’s hope they make it to the show tonight!} Accomplished local savant Andrew Cedermark is opening, along with a band from Harrisonburg called Hooking Up (you might remember their set opening for Heavy Cream & La Sera a while back?) {UPDATE: Hooking Up will not happen tonight — ha ha — and Matt Canino’s band RVIVR will be opening the show instead, rather than playing at Magnolia} The cover charge is $10 $12 and the doors open at 7:30. {UPDATE: Jacob says it starts promptly at 8:00; Cedermark at 9, TNV at 10, over by 11 so folks can go check out the Dust show afterwards}

I would also be remiss not to mention the Northern Diver show at Dust tonight; sadly, it’s something of a farewell show, since frontman Danny Zezeskie is moving to to Philadelphia soon (I hear tonight’s his birthday as well?); apparently the band’s frontwoman Bailee Elizabeth is following suit in a short while (which is too bad, because we had just asked her to start writing for Nailgun), but so anyway it’s more than possible that the band will continue in some form, this will be their last show as a Charlottesville band with their current rhythm section. If you haven’t caught them before, you’ll definitely want to; they’re awesome. (There are numerous rumors floating around there as well that this might be the last Dust show as well, and various denials of this rumor too. Of course Curt would never give you a straight answer about any of this — at least not one that you’d be able to decipher — but my philosophy for the past few years has been to treat every Dust show like the last one.)

They’re playing with the Dangerous Ponies, a band whom I’ve never been particularly crazy about, but I hear their live show is amazing and a lot of people love it (including the Northern Divers, who actually have a song about the last time the Ponies played in town.) The other acts on the bill are local neo-old-timers Dixie Licks and retro-rock duo Cinnamon Band. Your guess about start time and cover charge are probably as good as mine, ‘cuz that’s the way it works at Dust. {UPDATE: the show’s been pushed later so folks can come there after the Trinity gig; starts around 9pm, with Northern Diver on at Midnight.}

Also of note is the Magnolia House show; It’s also something of a special night for Nailgun contributor Gary Canino; his brother Matt’s band RVIVR is playing, and Gary and Matt are both playing together in the D.B.B. Plays Cups lineup; Gary says it’s a “brother trio, though this is probably not the final lineup as per usual…matt and I have never played music together before despite our years of playing in bands so this should be interesting…” The show also features local pop-punkers No Brainer — actually, Dan Sebring of No Brainer is also the bassist for Northern Diver, so presumably he’s going to be making a mad dash across town at some point this evening between sets. DBB’s starting at 9pm, then No Brainer, then RVIVR. That last band’s from Olympia so bring some $$ for gas (and make sure the band gets it!) {UPDATE: OK, so apparently the Magnolia house has lost power — it is literally a House after all — and the show’s being relocated. RVIVR are jumping on the Trinity bill with Cedermark and Times New Viking, replacing Hooking Up. Plans are afoot for DBB and No Brainer to play elsewhere in town this evening, but it’s still getting sorted out… holler if you can help out, otherwise we’ll update when we know what’s up.}

If that’s not enough, there’s also Jamie Dyer at Blue Moon, and ZZ Top at the Pavilion Which Shall Not Be Named.

Phew! What a night. All told, these are the most promising shows in the immediate future; it’s a bummer they’re all happening at once, but it means that wherever you go tonight you’re sure to have a good time.

    I have it from a good source that the Dust show is starting promptly at an early 8pm with the Dixie Licks on first. That’s where I’ll be but I want to go to literally all of these shows tonight. Pity.

    Some late-breaking developments: Hooking Up had to cancel their opening slot AND apparently the power is out at Magnolia, so RVIVR are going to lead off the Trinity show. Trying to reach Lex about No Brainer and DBB playing at The Pigeon Hole after, but her phone isn’t working, so Lex, if you’re reading this, get in touch!

    Okay, another development of the positive variety for anyone trying to do everything tonight: The Trinity show will start promptly at 8PM, but more importantly ending promptly at 11! Meanwhile, they’re pushing back the start of the show at DUST to 9PM, with Northern Diver starting at midnight. So it’s a packed night for sure. Have fun!

    whoa! OK, updating the blog now…

  • 10 James // May 31, 2011 at 6:01 pm

    OK, the post is now updated and should all be correct, for the time being.

    Also, as far as I know, both the Jamie Dyer and ZZ Top shows are still going ahead as planned. However, it has come to my attention — via their press photo — that ZZ Top has one member who does NOT have a long white Rip Van Winkle beard. (In fact, he looks a little like late-period Eddie Izzard.) However, Jamie Dyer has been working on a pretty good white beard lately… if everyone else is changing up their line-up at the last second tonight, perhaps Jamie Dyer could somehow end up playing in ZZ Top? I’d go to see that on ANY night, actually.

    thinking of taking the trolley to get to the gig in the first place… I ain’t drivin’ ‘cuz I’m already drinkin’

  • 12 Jacob // May 31, 2011 at 6:40 pm

    Sorry for any confusion, but it’s actually $10 advance, $12 at the door tonight.

  • 13 Andy // May 31, 2011 at 8:48 pm

    james – believe it or not, the one guy without a long white beard is actually named, Frank Beard…go figure.

    i’d suggest that there’s a sense of irony there, but there isn’t.

    Thanks to everyone who came out to dust last night for our last show. Seriously. It meant so much to us to have you there for our last moments as a band. We hope you enjoyed the last 9 months as much as we did. Also, im going to be sticking around town for a few months more, so i can still help with nailgun james. AND im still gonna keep playin music, so get in touch if you feel like playing with a uke player…

    I thought everybody knew Frank Beard was the ZZ Top member without the beard.
    Seriously…where has Nailgun been for like, the last thirty years?
