Merry Xmas! Here an awesome old Hip-Hop thing.

Colin (aka Brother Breakdown from Grits&Gravy, also the modest co-Overlord of the WTJU Rockers) emailed me this last week, and I think it’s pretty awesome. It’s an ABC 20/20 report on Rap music from 1981:

What’s really amazing to me is how thoroughly researched and relatively accurate it is; I’d be shocking to see anything on TV even half this accurate today, either about current music or Hip-Hop history. Apart from some initial mis-steps like talking about how it has “no melody,” otherwise they’ve pretty much nailed it!

Anyhow, enjoy. Hope you’re all having a pleasant Holiday weekend. Merry X-Mas everyone!

also: anyone who can dig up a copy of Jocko’s “Get Ready!” record wins my undying admiration.

also: “We arrested about Tirty-Seben Yoots…”

also: I’m sure I am not the first person to remark that Debbie Harry is a very attractive woman.

also: “JUST VOTE! JUST VOTE!” … don’t suppose anyone ID that guy?

Indeed, that’s pretty damn good for 1981! (And yes, that’s probably a greater reflection on the total mediocrity of modern journalism than anything else.)

Agreed. I sometimes listen to NPRs Hip Hop coverage which is often embarrassingly bad. Newsman standard dorky condescension aside, this is a great bit of reporting…
