“the TAMI Show” – Final Entry in this season of WTJU Rock&Roll Movie Night!

Well, my hosting abilities may be somewhat subdued by the fact that my allergies are blowing up all over the place (I’m spending the afternoon at home w/ decongestants and soup), BUT nevertheless I encourage you to come out to the Tea House tonight for the final entry in this semester’s program of Rock&Roll Movie Night, brought to you by the Rock Department at WTJU!  Tonight’s entry is “the TAMI show” — I’m surprised by how many people that I’ve mentioned it to have no idea what that is, but I guess it has been out of print for a million years … anyhow, I’ll let the trailer speak for itself:

In case you can’t / didn’t watch the clip, it’s a Televised variety show from 1964, featuring live performances by James Brown, the Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys, Chuck Berry, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Lesley Gore, and the Supremes … as well as such also-rans of yesteryear as Gerry and the Pacemakers, Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, and even The Barbarians (remember the band who did “Moulty,” the true inspirational tale about the drummer losing his hand which was on all those old Nuggets comps? That’s not the song they do here though, sadly). It’s hosed by Jan&Dean, and the house band is The Wrecking Crew, that infamous group of LA session musicians who played on all the Phil Spector singles. Thomas informs me that the young Mael brothers can be spotted in the audience. The thing was broadcast once in the 60′ and once in the 80’s, but was never fully available on video outside of bootlegs (the music rights issues were a nightmare), until it finally got released on DVD earlier this year.

SO come down to the Tea Bazaar tonight and we’ll all watch it and have fun. It’s a variety show, so don’t feel bad about showing up late or leaving early… it starts at 9pm and of course it’s totally Free!
