Dustin Wong

Dustin Wong is performing at the Tea Bazaar tonight, here in support of his new Thrill Jockey LP ‘Infinite Love’! You may not be familiar with Dustin Wong, since he’s only been performing as a solo artist for a little over a year, but you more likely will recognize his previous bands, Ponytail and Ecstatic Sunshine. Long story short, having seen Dustin Wong play in Baltimore a couple recently, I can say without reservation that he tops my list of shows I’ve seen this year!

Using only a guitar and an array of pedals, notably including a loop station, he creates dreamy, shimmering, sonic landscapes unlike anything you’ve heard before. Besides just being gorgeous music though, Dustin’s instrumental ability is absolutely astonishing. I’ve seen plenty of talented guitarists and loop-based musicians before, but nobody I’ve seen comes near the breathtaking seamlessness of Dustin Wong. The difficulty/execution ratio is absolutely incredible. Here’s a video preview of his album:

Dustin brings along a couple of fellow Baltimore bands, including Avocado Happy Hour, who I’ve also seen and are great, and Holy Ghost Party who I don’t know much about but they sound cool on the internet. Also opening up is Nelly Kate, semi-local loop-based songwriter, who is consistently wonderful.

This starts at 8PM, costs $7, and gets 2 thumbs up and 5 gold stars. Don’t miss this one!!!

pretty psyched about this one. Dustin played at the Tea House back with Ecstatic Sunshine (twice? or maybe just once?) and it was AMAZING.
