last Cosmonaut’s gig, and a PCA/Olio thing for local arts orgs (with an afterparty for each, one of which is DJed by me)

The big news this Friday night is that A Cosmonaut’s Ruin will be playing their final gig; if you’ve never heard their particular brand of post-metal exploration, tonight will be your last chance to check it out!¬† Cosmonaut’s are(were) a great band full of good dudes, sounding something like Converge playing space-rock, and I always enjoyed them and wished I heard them more.¬† I’m not sure why exactly it’s their last show; as I’ve previously noted, a lot of these guys are in a lot of other bands with a lot of the same people; BUT this will be your last chance to hear Tom, Matt, Steve, and Josh play in this particular configuration. They’re playing with local hardcore punkers¬†Worn In Red and a band from VA Beach called Constrictor. That’s at The Southern tonight; they’re going to open the doors up at 8pm for a pre-show happy-hour thing, this being their last show and all; there will be DJing (before and after) by DJ Thrashley, so stop by early to have a drink & say hi. {There’s an awesome poster for it, too, but I can’t really put it in the body of the post because it’s the tallest poster in the world.}

Another event of note this evening is the newest installment of Olio, the (bi-monthly?) gathering of the minds at CCDC; this one’s being presented by the Piedmont Council of the Arts; PCA’s mailing list says: “this event will provide a great opportunity to learn about the missions and programs of local arts groups while connecting with members of the Charlottesville creative community!” There are going to be TEN short (very short) presentations by local arts orgs, Olio-style: the list includes The Bridge, Lighthouse, Live Arts, 2nd st, and Writerhouse. Each org has “20 slides, 20 seconds per slide” to explain what they’re all about. It’s a free event, at the CitySpace (2nd floor of Market St. Parking Garage, above Bashir’s). So that’s from 8 to 10pm, refreshments are available, and it should be interesting and fun…

… but you know what’s really going to be fun? The afterparty at Zocalo, which will be DJ’d by Western Front and myself (DJ Hummingbird Feeder)! Wes is a good dude who is very good at spinning a crowd-pleasing mix of House and Top40 mashes; I play all sorts of stuff, I guess I’ll see what the ratio of middle-aged cocktail-sippers to rowdy youngsters is before I determine whether I’ll be playing universally-appealing Motown jams or deep cuts from the 80’s NY Rap archive; it will be good music either way.

Oh, and Sons of Bill are playing at the Jefferson tonight; I believe they were the first-ever band to play the Jefferson? Or at least the first locals. Anyway they’ll be returning there again tonight, and local folkers the Hill & Wood are opening up. That’s also at 8pm, tickets are $15 at the door!

    should also perhaps note that it’s gonna be a weekend full of DJing, for me … tomorrow afternoon I’ve got the coveted daytime spot guest-hosting the Garage Sale on WTJU from 2-4… then on Sunday night, my good friend and C-ville expatriot Patrick A Reed will be DJing a mellow set at Camino (the restaurant next to Vinegar Hill), where I’ll be hanging out before I head across town to host my regular Sunday late-night show. Then I’ve also got a daytime gig coming up next week. If you want to hear me play songs, this is a good week to do that.

    Tom finished his Ph. D., and he’s moving to San Diego for a new job. Typical C-ville/UVA stuff…

    Josh is finishing his Ph.D. in the next couple of weeks. He’s moving to Venus.

    Olio should be great! I’ve heard rumors of a fog machine being incorporated into one of the presentations and there’ll definitely be some keyboard-playing and singing in others. Plus we’ve got a keg for the actual event, not to mention the obvious availability of drinks at the Zocalo afterparty…

    Also, though I don’t know who did the Cosmonaut’s poster, the Olio one was created by the ever-great Matt Pamer!

    The poster for the Cosmonaut’s show was done by our buddy from VA Beach, Jeff Guinn (AKA “Jeff Crag”). Big thanks to everyone who made last night the blast that it was!!!

    The end of the night “Danzig Mother cover with half the crowd on stage and Matt wearing a wig” was off the hook!
