Sharon Van Etten, Marissa Nadler (and Breathe Owl Breathe) played the Tea Bazaar (videos)

Sharon Van Etten played to a pretty receptive crowd last Thursday. If she didn’t mention it, I would have never guessed that this was only her second show with her newly assembled band. They really did the Because I Was in Love stuff justice, and she sounded surprisingly natural with a full band. And between that and her ethereal solo numbers that bookended her performance, this was one of the best sets I’ve seen since I returned to Charlottesville a month ago.

Marissa Nadler was before that, and a lazy comparison for what she does (which I’ll make anyway) is Joanna Newsom. But she really does do these weird folk ballads about birds and whatnot, so it can’t be that far off. Some people talked during her set, others didn’t and were pissed about it. Luckily I put my flipcam pretty close and cut out the middle (talking) man.

(and I missed Breathe Owl Breathe.) How was that?
