NaS and Damian Marley, plus an after-party

You probably already knew that NaS and Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley — respectively, a rapper who hasn’t put out a good record in 16 years, and the 32-year-old son of a guy whose best music came out 44 years ago — are bringing their collaboration of dubious quality to the Charlottesville Pavilion this evening. C’est la vie.

BUT did you know that there’s an after-party at Rapture, with Q*Black and DJ Select? Well, you know now. That one has a good chance of actually being a fun show, too. It’s at 10pm, it costs $10 (or $5 with a stub from the Pavilion), and it’s 21+. Quintin’s my favorite rapper in town, and I seem to recall Select is pretty good as well. That’s tonight!

my friend and housemate, Chris Hlad, has an excellent anecdote about the time NaS performed at the University Amphitheater (I think?) in 1994, shortly after the release of “Illmatic” … apparently his entire arrival at the venue, performance, and departure lasted less than 10minutes. anyone remember that? reportedly this all-too brief performance led to an upset audience member snatching the cigar directly out of Nas’ mouth in disgust at a 14th-st house party later that evening.

I’m kind of screwing up this story. I heard it second-hand, and the details are fuzzy. I was actually going to ask Chris to recount it for y’all here, but he seems to have disappeared. Anyone seen Chris?

even if only 10 minutes, nas playing the amphitheater in 94 is amazing

and for the hard rock fans in town, we’ve got Sinclarity and Down Til Now at The Southern, sort of an anti-Nas show.
