Tea House Show and a Dance Party tonight

July 29th, 2010 · 6 Comments · By

There’s two good-lookin’ events tonight that you may be interested to check out… a Grits&Gravy Dance Party at The Box, and a Rock Show at the Tea Bazaar.

First up, the Tea House show; local rock band Astronomers and local mellow art-weirdos Mss. will be joined by a band with the unfortunate name of Hammer No More The Fingers, and something called the Demon Beat. Demon Beat are from West VA; HNMTF’s are from Durham. Actually, they played at the Bridge about a year ago(?), and despite having the worst band name in the entire world, I see to recall they were actually pretty good. That show costs $6 (not bad for 4 bands), and since the Tea House closes at Midnight, you might wanna get there on the early side; maybe around 8 or 8:30? Here’s Josh’s poster for that event:

Later on you can head over to The Box to catch the Grits n’ Gravy Soul & Funk Revue, in which WTJU’s Robin Tomlin and someone named Brother Breakdown will do just what the name says: play excellent vintage soul&funk music — all on vinyl! — for your dancing enjoyment. (apparently Colin is not spinning tonight? at least his name’s not on the poster… that’s too bad but it’ll be a swell gig either way Oops! Brother Breakdown is Colin Powell! So, yeah, it’ll be Colin and Robin. Hooray!).  That starts at 10pm and will continue until last call, so it’s definitely a thing you should check out later in the evening. And it’s free! although it’s also 21+.

man, those Grits & Gravy parties are SOOO GOOOOD. although, last time I went, some wasted yuppie got super-indignant and started giving me some drunken, incoherent lecture because I asked her to stop sitting on the turntable. sheesh. there’s nothing worse than a pack of rich thirty-somethings who party only once a month, get coked out of their minds and start acting like they own a place they’ve never been to before. let’s hope the crowd is a little more well-behaved, or at least less arrogant, this time around?

james, my man! failure on my part: brother breakdown = golden age. I have changed aliases, and alas, I was all incognito about it.

so, Colin will indeed be spinning!

hammer no more the fingers are pretty amazing live. totally unassuming and low key dudes (not your normal uber hip band types) then they set up and rock the hell out…VERY 90s Chapell Hill indie rock sound (superchunk, archers of loaf, polvo)…seriously they will blow you away.
