Great Tuesday Night Choices

Several very worthwhile events to choose from tonight at The Jefferson, the Tea Bazaar, and Blue Moon:

At The Jefferson, My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James (aka Yim Yames) appears with two lesser-known but also pleasant-sounding country-inflected songwriters named Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore. My Morning Jacket is somewhere on my list of favorite bands, and Jim James has one of the best and most distinctive sets of pipes in music today. Based on seeing MMJ perform before, James is a natural-born showman, so I’d expect nothing less than a first rate performance. And what’s more, a portion of tonight’s proceeds will go to benefit Appalachian Voices, an organization dedicated to ending the destructive practice of Mountaintop Removing coal mining. So that’s rad. Obviously it’s at least partly for a good cause, but it’s a bit of a bummer though that it’s $27 at the door. I’d begrudgingly pay that much for the full My Morning Jacket experience, but for an acoustic show that’s a tough pill to swallow. Of course, I’m perpetually broke, so maybe it’s just me. Doors open at 7PM.

Meanwhile, a pretty cool show is going on at the Tea Bazaar tonight. The extremely talented, cello-looping songwriter¬†Wes Swing is playing with two pretty interesting touring acts. First up is The Soil & The Sun from Grand Rapids, MI, who play dark, lush, driving folk-rock. They are touring in support of an artist named Timbre. Timbre Cierpke is a harpist perhaps better known for her collaborations with the band mewithoutYou. Her solo project is on the one hand beautiful and serene, and on the other orchestral and expansive — something like you might expect of a collaboration between Joanna Newsom and Sufjan Stevens. You can stream her entire album Little Flowers here. This one is at 8:30PM and costs $5.

And down at Blue Moon, local folk/bluegrass duo Don’t Tell Darlings are going to croon some tunes, free of charge. What time’s that start? 8PM? Just go get a burger and the music will start sooner or later!
