Girlfriends & Weed Hounds / Bobby & Phil St. Ours

July 5th, 2010 · 4 Comments · By

Now for the obligatory post where I talk about where I’m from. Bear with me here. Two worthwhile bands at the Box tonight:

Weed Hounds are from Long Island (I believe the four members are scattered about), and considering how culturally barren this place is, it’s pretty surprising that anything good at all can come from here these days (eg. not this or this or even this.) But Weed Hounds prove that statement totally wrong! For fans of Best Coast or Vivian Girls.*

Girlfriends are a Boston trio that feature that garage sound that the kids are going nuts for these days. I enjoy them a great deal myself. Pick up one of their cassettes if you get a chance. Best song title: “Suckin Rare Meat Off the Bone China.”

Go to this! The show will start around 10:30, is free, and is 21+. {UPDATE: Sarah says Great Dads are now on the bill as well! sounds sweet. -James}

Also, if you’re free beforehand, check out Bobby and Phil St. Ours at the Blue Moon Diner. Can’t find any info on them (or even a website), but upon googling them I see “Americana Rock” pop up a lot, for what that’s worth. That’ll start around 8, and is also free. {UPDATE: Laura G. lets us know in the comments that Bobby & Phil won’t actually be able to play tonight…. BUT Meg “Mrs. Mister Baby” Huddleston will be filling in. Phil St. Ours will instead be playing at the Blue Moon this Saturday for his CD Release Party. — James again}

*More Weed Hounds gushing: Here they are playing in my hometown, and here is their blog where you can download a lot of their music for free and find other stuff by them.

    the St. Ours brothers are great! (see also: local filmmaker Johnny St. Ours, and apparently a few more I haven’t even met).

    Bobby plays quiet, thoughtful country music that’s both austere and charming. I can’t find a proper website for him either, but M. Clark did a write-up on Bobby for MonkeyClaus a few years ago: http://www.monkeyclaus.org/culture/holy-bear-crossing-bobby-st-ours-solo-album-represents-the-blue-ridge-spirit/

    Phil was the drummer in Bobby’s band the few times I saw him, and he was also a founding member of Mister Baby, as well as PantherBurn; he’s quite a gregarious fellow, and I believe he’s got an album of his own coming out soon. Never seen the Brothers do the material they’ll be doing tonight, but Laura has assured me it’s both hilarious and good.

    Great Dads is gonna play at The Box, too. Late addition.

    Sadness for tonight, cause some late breaking news/scheduling confusions mean that Megan Huddleston plays at the Blue Moon tonight, but you can catch Phil on Saturday for his CD release party out back of the very same Blue Moon Diner!

    not that Megan playing is sad, ’cause it’s in fact, wonderful. Just not actually St. Ours
