Soul & Funk Extravaganza at the Tea Bazaar Tonight!

I’m seriously excited about this one:

To summarize, DJ Golden Age is Colin Powell (co-head of WTJU’s rock dept.) and DJ Rum Cove is of course Robin Tomlin (host of the excellent “Soulful Situation” show on Monday afternoons); they have a semi-regular DJ event called “Grits&Gravy” in which they play awesome old soul&funk 45’s. You may have heard their sets during the last few WTJU Dance Parties, or at the Sharon Jones After-Party two weeks ago.¬† They’ve put together tonight’s event, with two openers including myself and WTJU new recruit / surf scholar Brian Chidester, as well as a headliner: a fellow from Richmond named DJ Pari, who has quite an impressive resum√©. It’s a perfect opportunity to come dance on a Friday night!

It’s at the Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar tonight, and the cover is only $3 (an early draft of the poster had an ambiguous font that made it look like “$8,” but please rest assured it’s only three.) I’ll be DJing first, from roughly ~9pm to ~9:45, but there will be great tunes all night, so whenever you can get there you’re sure to hear something great. (Shamefully, I’ll also be the only guy with a laptop — all these other fellows have 45rpm knowledge that puts me to shame, and I’m lucky to be sharing a bill with them.) Unless you are graduating this weekend or something, there is nothing else happening in town tonight, so come to the Tea House with your dancing shoes on!
