2007!

December 31st, 2007 · 8 Comments · By

I don’t have the time to do an extensive post on all of the great music that we’ve seen in 2007. But it’d be cool if everyone who reads this shares a favorite moment or two. Leave some comments!

Here’s one of mine, with an accompanying video from YouTube: Acid Mothers Temple at the Satellite Ballroom:

Also, off the top of my head: Circle at the Tea Bazaar, The Winks at the Tea Bazaar, Bill Callahan at Gravity Lounge, Elvis Costello singing “Alison” at JPJ, Arrah and the Ferns and Bride of the Narwhal in a Newcomb Hall conference room, The Extraordinaires doing their Ribbons of War: The Musical at Live Arts, and many, many more…

Man, I saw a LOT of shows this year. In think I must have averaged two or three a week… Here were my favorites, in rough chronological order:

Kohoutek at Dust (opening for MV&EE)

Drakkar Sauna at the Tea House

Noxagt / Red Wizard (Tea House)

Acid Mothers Temple at Satellite Ballroom

    USAisaMonster at the Tea House

Tunnels / Acre / Galactic Core (their first show, I think!)

Midnight Snake (nobody saw this show, because everyone was at the Pteradactyl show at Saxx that night, but trust me — it was AMAZING; can’t wait till they come back)

Captain Ahab (Doofgoblin and I got to open for them, which was fun; they’re friends-of-friends from college)

    Corndawg at The Bridge

    Circle at the Tea House

These are Powers / Ostinato (Tea House)

Pokey Lafarge at Miller’s (go see this guy!)

Alasehir / Kohoutek / Suishou No Fune (Tea House)

Dark Meat / Mouser (twice in one night! insane!)

Davis Salisbury’s solo set (opening for the second Galactic Core show)

also, I should point out that the aforementioned Circle set from the Tea House show in October has been released as a live CD… the fine folks at Aquarius gave it a nice write-up over at aquariusrecords.org

I also really enjoyed Animental, Davis Salisbury and Josh Van Horne playing on the tea house patio back when it was warm out.

Hey folks, thanks for the enthusiasm. I thoroughly enjoyed both of those shows, and would count the other folks playing as highlights for me (animental was something else that night, as usual, and Galactic Core is pretty mighty, for sure). Also, it wasn’t just me in the back deck, the one and only Matthew Clark was on the beaters to keep me in line. Other highlights:

Bad Ghost, Boids, and Reptilian Shapeshifters at Outback Lodge—diverse and great, all of them. Boids covered the Jesus Lizard, something not generally advisable, and did it righteously

Surprisingly, The Sea and Cake—something from my college days that managed to transcend nostalgia and just plain rocked, believe it or not. People can age gracefully in rock sometimes, pretty inspiring

USAisaMonster—always getting better and better. Not even the shitty Tea House P.A. could ruin this show (no offense, the Tea House is the best in every other way). How about a P.A. fundraiser or ten?

Missed way more than I made, unfortunately, so I am gonna keep it short and sweet. A ridiculously good year for music in Charlottesville, though. Keep it up John.

oh yeah, that bad ghost/boids/reptilian shapeshifters show was ammmmaazzzzinnnggg. brian thackery’s guitar playing blew my mind that night.

and bonde do role, too: only 70 or so people, but EVERYBODY was dancing.
