a Dance Party & two Art shows (w/music)

Once again there are plenty of things to do this Friday evening…

The big one of course is the WTJU Dance Party, which is part of the station’s 2010 Rock fundraising Marathon (which is already in progress). That’s from 9pm to 1am at the Tea Bazaar tonight; the music will be provided by several different WTJU DJs: in rough order, it’s DJ Law (from Aunt Beast, hostess of the One Man Band show this AM), Brian Chidester (newcomer to the station, host of the Psychedelic Surf show), then myself (DJ Hummingbird Feeder), then Shaun Cullen (who’s doing the Jonathan Richman show, and I believe sometimes hosts the Garage Sale) Bryan Thomas (from Flashin’ Lights, host of the Discotheque show), then Michael and Peter (who are doing a swell Fugazi show on the air right now!).  I don’t think everyone is necessarily spinning songs related to their marathon shows, although a few are bound to sneak in… the cover charge is $5, a percentage of which goes towards supporting the station’s fund drive.

Two cool shows are happening at different galleries downtown a little earlier in the evening; I just found out yesterday that Armageddon Community Roundtable (aka Charlottesville’s abstract synth/noise/drone supergroup) will be performing 8:00pm tonight in a vacant storefront downtown; it’s on the corner of 1st St (across from Snookey’s), as part of an art show happening there called Show Your Magic to the World You Are In; I checked out the show yesterday, it’s filled with a ton of stuff ranging from bad to good, and the large musical ensemble should make a nice addition (the show’s up through this weekend, I believe.) That one’s free.

At exactly one block north, at exactly the same time, there’s another free show happening in an art gallery in an unusual place; this one’s a multi-band bill at The Garage, featuring Cville’s own Mss. and the Hilarious Posters, as well as two folks I’m not familiar with: Travis Kokas and Sam Buck Rosen. The poster for that one is visible on your right (until tomorrow; it’s also repeated below the fold…)

If you’re spending the evening at home (or working, or driving around for whatever reason) then be sure to tune in to WTJU at 91.1 FM; there’s a Gang of Four show from 2-4pm, a Sly Stone tribute at 5:00, and an Isaac Hayes on Stax show at 7; Professor Bebop will be playing songs from the year 1960 at 9pm, and there’s more coming up tomorrow and throughout the weekend, including my Jandek show from 8-10am tomorrow. If you’re listening in… don’t forget to donate!

Sam Buck Rosen is awesome — something like a cross between Arthur Russell and No Kids, with a dash of Dirty Projectors (fitting, given that he’s collaborated with members of that band). Very excited to see him play — just hoping I can get out of work at the MiLK PACk in time… Thanks to Sam, Mss., and Hilarious Posters for allowing him to join the bill on pretty late notice!

armageddon community roundtable is noisy right now. like, dirty noisy. like, slip-n-slide dirty feel-so-good-to-take-a-bath-afterwards-but-now-it-feels-so-right noisy.
