White Rabbits / Here We Go Magic @ the Jefferson tonight

Monday. Humid. Let’s get to it. Two great bands are playing at the Jefferson.

Here We Go Magic is Luke Temple’s new band. They got a lot of attention after their most recent tour (opening for Grizzly Bear), and their s/t album has gathered them a lot of positive attention. I would recommend “Collector” as a good place to start with them.

White Rabbits are a six-piece hailing from Brooklyn, NY. I’ve listened to their first album, Fort Nightly, constantly for the past two years or so. (I also interviewed them for the Dec last September.) Fort Nightly is a great mix of Walkmen-esque melodies (but if the Walkmen were a calypso band), clattering percussion (the band has two awesome drummers), two extremely talented frontmen, and just great songwriting.Even more impressive is their live show. This will be my 5th time seeing them, and every time their energy and chops astound me. I wasn’t as impressed with their second album, It’s Frightening (even with Spoon’s Britt Daniel behind the boards), as it too often veered towards a bland homogenous sound (though I do enjoy these songs live). I also couldn’t believe a band called White Rabbits called their album It’s Frightening with Frightened Rabbit being a popular band and all.

This show is $14 d.o.s., and doors are at 8 (so I’m assuming HWGM @ 9, WR @ 10/10:15)

Also, Nate Bolling and Kyle Woolard of Astronomers are playing at the Box tonight. That starts at 10 and is FREE. The facebook event promises “songs of their own and some great covers,” so I would bank on hearing some Uncle Jemima, a little bit of Astronomers stuff, some solo Bolling, and Radiohead covers (I’ve seen Astronomers do Bodysnatchers and Kyle do Paranoid Android) or songs that sound “like a perfect mix between Radiohead and Franz Ferdinand.”

Astronomers/Uncle Jemima/Radiohead/Franz Ferdinand fans, the Box tonight is for you.

Happy Monday!

Here We Go Magic were great on Saturday at MACRoCk, though playing after the super high-energy Love Language set wasn’t totally ideal placement for their stuff, which is a little slower and more cerebral.

Anyways, I’m much more excited about them than White Rabbits, who are still decent enough in my book — just barely on the Spoon/Walkmen side of extremely palatable and radio-friendly, but also good.
