Tuesday Jams

I’ll be checking out my first show at The Jefferson tonight — Ben Folds! Ben Folds holds a special place in the history of my relationship with music. He’s more or less what got me paying attention to music in a more serious sort of way, leading me to check out bands like Built to Spill and The Pixies and learning to play piano. While I’m not as much a fan of his more recent work — which is really spotty at best — for the sake of nostalgia and the fact that he’s a great live showman and awe-inspiring pianist, I’ll be there. Also, I’m going with my Mom, who is fucking stoked.

Meanwhile, down the street at the Tea Bazaar there’s another worthwhile show. Grandchildren are back once again. They’re an electronics-driven rock group from Philadelphia with some moments reminiscent of Animal Collective or El Guincho — an interesting mix of organic and synthetic sounds. They’ll be joined by locals Manorlady and a brand new band group called Nurse Beach, with members from St. God’s, Tyger & The Lamb, and Bear War. Should be cool! $5, 8:30PM

Vijith from The Hook showed this to me from the current Ben Folds tour. Pretty clever as stage gags go.

I’ll also be at the Ben Folds show–haven’t seen him live since high school, and have heard good reports from recent tours. I think it’ll be cool to see him by himself.
