first of march

I have both a known love for Chris Knox and a known failure to keep up with new releases. But I am lucky to have savvy friends who keep me informed. One of these friends recently made me aware of Stroke: Songs for Chris Knox, which came out on Merge late last year. The two disc compilation consists of Chris Knox covers by everyone from Jeff Mangum to Jay Reatard with Bill Callahan, Stephin Merritt, Yo La Tengo, Lou Barlow, et al in between. All proceeds will be used to mitigate the rehabilitation costs of the crippling stroke Knox suffered last June. It is locally available at Sidetracks for something steep like $18 but you can sample and buy it a little more cheaply at the Merge site here. Accidentally forgot to¬†mention earlier it’s cheaper on Merge in mp3 form and the physical cds are hard to remove from the case without damaging them so you should buy the collection in digital form. And today on this sunny first day of March, you MIGHT be able to attend the kickoff party for the Charlottesville Chapter of the Virginia Production Alliance but you have to R.S.V.P. and I’m not sure if it’s too late to do that. The event is invite-only and a guest list will be checked at the door.¬† To R.S.V.P., you have to email vicechaircvpa@filmva.org, including your name, phone number and profession in the email. I understand this organization aspires to bring lots of film jobs to the area, which reminds me of the Connecticut Film and Digital Media Workforce. The party is from 6-9 at Random Row Books.Late night: DJ Hummingbird Feeder presents an excellent repertoire of hits for your listening and dancing pleasure at The Box from 10:30-last call. That is of course no cover and 21+.

Just a heads up both akron/family & warpaint are playing in harrisonburg tonight at clementine cafe. I realize that its a little bit of a drive from cville, but it should be a fun show

Andy, do you live in Harrisonburg now?

Clementine is a really beautiful place, like something out of a magazine.

merge records is charging $20 for stroke direct (including free media mail shipping), so i’m not sure why $18 would be considered “steep” for a 2cd set. a lot of bands/labels are still charging $15 for a single disc!

AKRON/FAMILY!!! Absolutely worth the drive, no question.

baconfat, I thought the same thing at first, plus there’s also the delightful logical paradox of comparison shopping for a benefit CD which supports a cause you care about…

Just found out — Delta Blues Master and Fat Possum artist T Model Ford is playing an impromptu show at the Tea House tonight at 7:30. I’ll be honest, he wasn’t really on my radar before, but a lot of folks are really excited that he’s here, so I’d definitely say it’s worth checking out.

    It’s free, by the way.

more cheaply referring to how you can get the mp3 version for $12 which is a better deal than $19 because it’s hard to get the cds out of the package without scratching them and there are no bonuses making the physical copy more worthwhile.

comparing cd prices with mp3 prices is weaksauce. the bonus that makes the physical copy worthwhile is that if your hard drive crashes, you’re not out 12 bucks with nothing to show for it unless you burned a cd-r.

i had no problem removing the cds from their respective cases without damaging them. but then again, i am a professional. also, the physical packaging is quite pulchritudinous.

i had to tore the package in two places removing the discs and scratched the first one. very hard to get out!
