Dzian! (a little too late) / Borrowed Beams (also late)

So I totally meant to blog about this, but then got ambushed by hectic work crap and completely forgot about it. (Apparently my four other Nailgun co-contributors felt similarly, so the result is that we never told you about this show before it happened. Sorry folks!)

Anyway, the band Dzian!, a local surf-rock band with international influences, played a show at — believe it or not — Fashion Square Mall earlier this afternoon, along with a Dance troupe (whom, I understand, are a variety of women recruited from excellent local restaurants doing Taiwanese Burlesque (?!)), in an event presented by the Chinese student association, to celebrate the Year of the Tiger. I haven’t seen them with the dancers, but Dzian! are a really fun band; I know most-if-not-all of them from their far artier / more academic musical pursuits, but it’s really fun to see them get together and have fun and play goofy surf-rock songs in a variety of languages and on a variety of instruments. I can’t even imagine what seeing them in Fashion Sqaure might have been like… anybody got a review? some anecdotes? amusing photos or video? I’m stuck at work at the moment, but I sure would have like to have been there or at least helped promote it beforehand if I had remembered it earlier (i.e. if I wasn’t a big jerk).

UPDATE: just remembered another thing I forgot which was happening this afternoon: Borrowed Beams of Light were live-in-the-studio guests on WTJU’s “Garage Sale” this afternoon. Borrowed Beams is the solo project of Invisible Hand / Nice Jenkins drummer Adam Brock… he’s had an EP out under that name for a year now (much beloved by WTJU DJs), but has only played a show or two in that form thus far… there’s another one coming up soon, which will also feature the Extraordinaires AND a farewell performance by the Raquellos, so you can all start getting excited about that one… (I’ll put the date on the sidebar calendar when I know it.)

It was so utterly surreal and fantastic! By the time we got there, it seemed like maybe we’d missed most of the other performers unfortunately (dragon dance!) but we still caught a couple flautists and some long-sleeved dancers who were all amazing. There were also little booths set up with calligraphy and origami, plus a tea tasting, and the turnout was impressive, with lots of charming little kids (the clear favorite being the little boy dressed up in a power rangers costume with a pharaoh headdress and red cowboy boots). Dzian! and their dancers performed a great set and the crowd seemed to like it a lot. [As a side note, it was quite strange to be in Fashion Square again after all these years – there’s a moonbounce store (!!!) of sorts that you can apparently just go play in or rent out for parties (ahem… someone… pleeeeeeease).]

I think this picture sums all much of the fun we had at the Fashion Square Mall yesterday : )

I’m sorry to have missed Dzian! Looks like it was awesome.

W/r/t the update about Borrowed Beams and Raquellos–thanks very much for mentioning us. However, speaking for the Raquellos, we are planning a final farewell show for sometime in late April. So while Extraordinaires/Borrowed Beams/Raquellos might very well be the best rock and roll show ever, it won’t be the last you’ll hear of us.
