Invisible Hand + Drunk Tigers at Southern

December 17th, 2009 · 10 Comments · By

This one should be pretty self-explanatory:

If you need further enumeration; Invisible Hand is the best rock band in Charlottesville. Drunk Tigers are one of my favorite bands in Charlottesville (not the same thing). And Vevlo Eel are … uh, a band with a difficult-to-enunciate name, and I have not heard them.

Corsair was originally on the bill a few weeks ago, but they dropped off and got replaced by Invisible Hand.  There are also rumors circulating that Drunk Tigers might not play the show tonight…. this is a BAD idea!  Don’t do it, guys!  I mean, don’t NOT do it! Play the show! {UPDATE: just heard from both Bierce and Zach Carter that the Drunk Tigers definitely are playing tonight. Yay!}

    oh yeah, Adam wanted me to note that the doors open at 8pm and that the cover is $6. I meant to put that info on the poster, but I got halfway through and realized that font had no numbers in it, and I was already sick of cutting out all the letters to spell “seventeenth,” so I left it off. (Sorry guys.) But anyway, now you know: Eight PM, Six bucks.

    Who’s spreading that rumor James? We are playing this show. It was NEVER in doubt.

    phew, that’s a relief. there were definitely rumors to the contrary circulating at the taphouse last night, although the fog of alcohol prevents me from recalling the details precisely… sorry for the potential mis-info, it’s been amended.

    Vevlo Eel is, in fact, the band of Andy from the Southern. I missed their actual set, but happened to catch the soundcheck, and they sounded a whole lot like old Soul Asylum. definitely some grunge-era holdovers on the guitar sound. could be fun, with the right crowd…

    Drunk Tigers sounded great! and definitely a significant improvement over their last set at The Southern months ago. the sound was still a little unbalanced (for some reason Bierce is always miles louder than everyone else when they play the Southern … but Zach is always much louder at the Tea House. your guess is as good as mine). they even knocked off a fun cover of Wham!s “Last Christmas” which sounded suspiciously like the Undertones’ “Teenage Kicks” … which is all well and good, but their usual smashingly good, set-closing cover of Wreckless Eric’s “Whole Wide World” inexplicably contained a verse of Buffalo Springfield(!?!) this time around.

    Invisible Hand played a whole bunch of new songs, and the usual favorites, and they sounded pretty fucking awesome. (I’d guess the new material was like, half their set?) They even resuscitated their old cover of Love’s “Little Red Book” (which I had never realized was actually a Burt Bacharach / Hal David song originally!?). There was a sudden mid-set arrival of wasted 21st-Bday celebrators, so it was pretty great to suddenly have a enthusiastic dance floor full of folks who were unfamiliar with Invisible Hand but infectiously enthusiastic nonetheless. Apparently two Tigers jumped onstage with their guitars at one point, although I missed the moment, having just returned from the bathroom. I did catch Adam’s comment “plug in next time, guys.”

    The crowd demanded an encore, and they came back out (actually TD never left) with a RIPPING version of VU’s “Run Run Run” which might possibly be their best performance of that song. (although it contained yet more mischievious cover-verse-swapping trickery … anyone remember what song Brock was singing? I can’t recall.) Anyhow, they definitely took the song in a noisier / weirder / heavier direction in the past, and to be honest it gave me a pretty serious hankering for the old Articulate Chewbacca material, but it was a more or less perfect way to end the evening.
