LAKE on Monday! …and other musings…

October 29th, 2009 · 3 Comments · By

Okay, so you all hear me talk up enough shows that it’s probably a little difficult to seperate the great stuff from the just pretty-good or, okay, even occasionally bad stuff.

So, I’ll be really really explicit about the fact that I’ve been excited for quite some time now about Monday’s upcoming LAKE show. Really. Fucking. Psyched. Like ‘I’m-seeing-them-in-Baltimore-on-Sunday-too’ psyched. LAKE is a K Records band out of Olympia, WA that’s had a couple previous low-key releases and have apparently just quietly been getting great for a few years now. (And no, Sarah, I don’t why LAKE is all-caps, but I will ask them.) Their brand new Karl-Blau-produced album Let’s Build a House is totally stellar. While their earlier lo-fi releases were great and totally suited them at the time, this album sounds produced and full, like a band ready to tackle some bigger things. Nothing about LAKE is particularly flashy or aggressive or showy. It’s a simple mixture of beautiful and catchy melodies layered over relaxed grooves in an overall pleasant sonic environment. No big tricks or anything. Just great jams and good, clean fun.

Opening up is another K Records band, The Curious Mystery, who just happened to be cruising through on the same day. Show is at the Tea Bazaar at 8PM Monday night and costs $6.

Just one more note on this: Not to sound, I dunno, pompous or something, but everytime I’ve given a show a real special shout-out like this one, it’s turned out to be really really great (e.g. Jonathan Kane’s February, tUnE-YaRdS). Just sayin’.

A couple other things:

  • In response to my post a couple days ago, I think some folks thought that I might be ‘getting out of the game’, so to speak, with the booking of shows. Not so! I’m definitely into it as much as ever, but the focus is definitely going to be on scaling back and doing fewer and better things. Doing 31 shows in a month, as I did this month, was basically, well, dumb and I definitely noticed that the quality of things was suffering a bit. So, lesson learned. On we go!
  • There’s a TON of exciting things the next couple days, so expect a big post or two on all that. I think for the most part the word is out about that stuff, but we’ll put it all in one easy-to-digest write-up quite soon.
  • And does anyone have any good suggestions for a Halloween costume? Current ideas are: 1) Turn myself into a Picasso person (i.e. make my features blocky and weird and bizarre), 2) A wormhole, or 3) Teen Wolf (somehow I’ve never taken advantage of my last name on Halloween). I’m leaning toward a wormhole but am still entertaining other ideas.

    Teen Wolf.

    Definitely, definitely Teen Wolf.

i’m sorry but the TuNe-YaRdS cap/no cap alternation feebly attempts to inspire nostalgia for and humor in something that was never likable or amusing in the first place.

This is a really good band. Really. They don’t seem like something I would normally like… but damn! Best show to come here in a while.
