Milano, Shaky Hands, Blog of the Week

A couple shows on the radar tonight. First up, at Milano Cafe around 7PM, there’s a little acoustic showcase featuring local Uncle Jemima (C’ville), John Houx (NYC), and Stephanie Nilles (also NYC). Stephanie Nilles is a really, really charming songwriter and pianist with a vaudeville/swing/jazz sound, which isn’t usually my thing but she rocks it, partly because she’s got alarmingly great chops and strong delivery. I was pretty thoroughly surprised and impressed when she played the Tea Bazaar a few months ago. Check it out.

Right after that, there’s a show at Tea Bazaar, The Shaky Hands (Portland, OR) and Pompadour (C’ville). The Shaky Hands are a somewhat buzzed about act on Kill Rock Stars. I’m not going to get too deeply into describing these bands, for reasons mentioned yesterday. Suffice to say, check the links or show up! (9PM, $7)

Also, I’m being filmed at this exact moment for a segment on CBS 19 tonight. Nailgun Media was chosen as their Blog of the Week and I was interviewed on behalf of Nailgun. So, check it out! Should air at ~6:40PM. Or you can stream it at Let’s see if I manage not to sound like a complete idiot!

those pompadour kids are great and feature TWO ladies. i don’t know how old they are but i know they are still in school at uva. they sound like they’re mainly influenced by 90s bands like lush …which is very impressive to me.

Is that seriously impressive these days? Sad sad state of affairs. Pick up a Jimmy Rodgers or Cliff Carlisle record and we’ll talk.
