it will be loud, probably crowded

I have been looking forward to today for a long time and not just because I’m supposed to receive shoes in the mail. Today is special because Whatever Brains are heading up to Charlottesville. I love their music, which is garage rock descended from the likes of The Stooges and the MC5. I’d go so far as to say I hear some Sonic Youth in there, too. I’m sure most of you know this by now but Whatever Brains is the baby of Rich Ivey—yep, that guy who’s been singing with Order for the past couple of years or so.

Gull, Nate Rappole’s one-man band, will be joining the Brains and making his C-Ville debut. Best known for his work in Ultra Dolphins and Snack Truck, Nate is one of the sickest drummers I’ve ever seen. I happened to catch the Gull set at Macrock this year and it seemed appropriate that he would be centerstage with his drums because he’s so compelling to watch. As Gull, he plays guitar, drums, and sings simultaneously. He’s attracted some attention busking on the streets of Richmond in this very configuration while wearing a skull mask. I would say he should try this out on the downtown mall but considering the cops busted up that drum circle who attempted a similar feat, he’d probably get shut down within a half hour of starting.

Lastly, The Invisible Hand will play. Adam’s original songs are some of my favorite things to listen to these days. Simply put, he writes great music. Even though it’s unnecessary for the band to play any songs other than their own, the Hand always throw in a few covers. But I guess that’s what hands do, they throw and I, for one, am not going to turn down their interpretation of a classically great song. Shall we compile a list, for documentation’s sake, of what they have covered thus far? I suppose I’ll need help with this: “Little Red Book” by Love, “Running Up that Hill” by Kate Bush, “Run Run Run” by Velvet Underground, “You Really Got Me” by the Kinks, “Victoria” by the Kinks, “Death of a Clown” by the Kinks, “I’m Only Sleeping” by The Beatles. Please feel free to add.

Things are at the Box and a 10:30 start time is imperative due to three bands. No cover, 21+ please.

Everyone should go see GULL! I’ll add that I think he actually made his Charlottesville debut at a show a few years ago… I can’t remember anymore if it was a Tyrannosaurus Rock show with Parts & Labor or if it was another show (around the same time, same place) with Buddyship, but either way it was awesome!
And here is nice video of him playing that my friend Jason took.

also, I’ve always thought the Hand should cover a Wire song. for all of the Kinks comparisons in the local press, they’ve always reminded me much more of Wire, or even the early Eno records, at least in spirit. I think they could do a great version of “Too Late,” although perhaps it would be a little obvious/redundant…

also, I forgot about “Running Up That Hill” … that shit was hilarious.

For all of his talk about Sparks, I’d like to see Adam and the boys kick out a Mael Brothers jam! Something For The Girl With Everything gets my vote!!!! Or perhaps Minnie Mouse….
