“World Music” Festival at UVA today

March 29th, 2009 · No Comments · By

Just realized that the “World Music” festival today at UVa is already happening… the time got pushed back to noon from 3:30pm.

“World Music” has always been a really stupid term, a way of grouping together various disparate  and unrelated non-popularized / non-Westernized cultures into a single “demographically appealing” category … it’s a marketing tool, and an ignorant way to view music and the rest of the world. That said, a lot of really great music often does fall under this imaginary umbrella, and this festival promises the chance to see a lot of cool stuff. Here’s the full line-up of acts:

12:00 – 12:45      Charlottesville Javanese Gamelan
1:00 – 1:45     Gamelan Raga Kusuma (University of Richmond)
2:15 – 3:00     William and Mary Nordic Folk Music and Dance Ensemble
3:15 – 4:00     William and Mary Appalachian Ensemble
4:15 – 5:00     William and Mary Middle Eastern Music Ensemble
5:15 – 6:00     University of Virginia Klezmer Ensemble
6:30 – 7:15     University of Virginia African Music and Dance Ensemble

It’s at Old Cabell Hall this afternoon, and it’s free!
