Winner of the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, Searching for Sugar Man is supposed to be a fantastic film about filmmakers seeking Sixto Rodriguez. Rodriguez is based in Detroit, released a few records in the 1970s on the now-defunct Sussex label. The records made little impact and the label folded a few years after. Through a series of flukes, Rodriguez became enormously popular in South Africa. Upon hearing rumors about his alleged suicide, the filmmakers go on the search. As my friend and Director/Auteur Anthony Restivo says, “Hijinks ensue.”
For those of you not going to the Phosphorescent show, it’s free tonight at the Downtown Library, part of their Documentary film series. Maybe this poster of Michael Jordan also inspires you to get a library card while you’re there?
