Today is the first day of August, also known as the first day of the last month of summer. We’ve all had our fun living in a shitty sublet with no windows, looking up graduate programs and crying, and preparing to move back into our parents’ house. But now it’s time to really enjoy these final weeks of humidity and… okay, at least there are some good shows coming to Charlottesville in the next few days.
Two of my current favorite Charlottesville acts are playing together tomorrow at the Tea Bazaar, with DJ Hummingbird Feeder playing between sets. Great Dads is an experimental project involving Adam Smith and a rotating cast of other C’villans. They’re one of the most versatile noise acts I’ve seen play here in town, progressing with each show they play to more complex arrangements of sound. Last time there were bongos. Nurse Beach is a group with members from RVA and C’ville that deserves more attention. They opened for The Men at the Tea Bazaar back in May, delivering aggressive bursts of lo-fi punk using synths and keyboards.
2. Endolphins + Double Saginaw Familiarity + WOJCIK at Magnolia House (9 p.m., bring $$ for the bands)
And, as always, Magnolia has a great lineup for Friday night as well. Endolphins are a math rock band from NYC/Chicago; DSF is a singer/songwriter from D.C., and WOJCIK are a three-piece garage rock group from Brooklyn.
