Dylan just let me know that he’s put together a last-minute garage-rock show at his house, which has now apparently been dubbed “Magnolia” (you know where that house is by now, right? get in touch with one of us if you need directions, and are not a police officer.)

The line-up is Three Happenin’ Guys and Shining Path, two bands from Alabama who are on tour together. Don’t know much about either one (apart from having a vague familiarity with the names), but it looks like it could be fun. It’s happening at 10:30pm! Bring some cash for the bands, if you have any.

That’s merely the first in an entire week full of crazy shows; Jacob Wolf (the man behind Holy Smokes booking, and occasional Nailgun contributor, and also the guy whom everyone keeps mistaking me for) took the month of August off, but has returned with a full feast of promising rock&etc at the Tea Bazaar; toss in an awesome Jefferson show AND a crazy street fair, and that adds up to a full 7 days of great music. We’ll write more about these later in the week, but here’s a quick rundown:

Tuesday night: The War On Drugs (Kurt Vile’s backing band), along with The Invisible Hand and Cinnamon Band at the Tea Bazaar; 9pm, $7.

Wednesday: the Tea Bazaar hosts FOUR bands, including Future Islands, Pictureplane, Double Dagger, and My Milky Way Arms; I’m expecting this one might be huge, so you might wanna get there early, but showtime’s at 9pm (doors at 8:30), and the cost is $10-12 (not sure which?)

Thursday: Marissa Nadler and Sharon Van Etten are at the Tea Bazaar, along with Breathe Owl Breathe; a whole evening of ladies who sing nice. 9pm, $10.

Friday: Swedish contemporary-psych legends Dungen are at the Jefferson, along with a band called No Joy and a recent fav from Roanoke called the Young Sinclairs!

…AND there’s an after-party at the Tea Bazaar at Midnight, with Great Dads and Doomstar!! The Jeff. thing’s at 8pm and costs $14, the Tea House thing is afterwards. AND Adam and Thomas are listed as DJing at The Box that night (anyone know the deal about that?)

Saturday: a bunch of restaurants (including Blue Moon and Maya) in what’s apparently now called “Midtown Charlottesville” — although I will continue to refer to it as “West Main” — are putting together a giant street fair on Saturday afternoon, with music by We Are Star Children, Mr. Baby, PantherBurn, Barling & Collins and more, as well as having craft tables set up, a Waiter Olympics competition, and tons of other fun stuff. That’s from Noon to 5pm on West Main St;

THEN on Saturday night, prog-pop duo Pattern Is Movement will return to town, along with locals Mss. and Nelly Kate! Should make for a very fun evening; that’s at the Tea Bazaar at 9pm, and it’s $7. Also on Saturday: Dzian! at PVCC, and Old Calf (Ned Oldham+Matty Metcalf) at Cville Coffee! phew.

Sunday is perhaps the day I’m most excited about myself; one of my favorite contemporary musicians, Greg Davis, is playing at the Tea Bazaar, along with his equally-awesome colleague Ben Vida (he’s the guy from Bird Show, was in that band Town&Country; deep credentials); they’re playing with Scott Ritchie’s drone project Myceum, and Wendy & Carey’s post-Pinkos duo The Grapefruit Experiment, who due to the added presence of Jonathan Zorn will now be called the Jackfruit Experiment! the Tea House isn’t even usually open on Sundays, but it will be just for this show; it’s at 9pm, and the cover is $7!

Oh, and also Garrison Keillor is doing A Prairie Home Companion at the Pavilion on Sunday evening, which is really awesome. I’ve long been of the opinion that people who do not like Garrison Keillor are simply incorrect; it’s like disliking sunshine or dancing; a serious sign of character deficiency. This might be the very first Pavilion show I’ve actually been tempted to attend; we’ll have to see how clearly I can hear his voice from my front porch before I decide.

So… that’s a pretty fucking full week of excellence. That’s like a whole season’s worth of good shows in seven days. What more could you possibly want? Well, how about Blissed Out, Nurse Beach, and Rhythm Bandit at the Tea House on Monday? Yeah, that ought to do it.

Oh, and on my radio show last night I played tracks by about seven of these bands; you’ll be able to stream the whole show online for the next two weeks by going to the WTJU tape vault!

Tonight’s big event is the show at The Southern with ManorLady, Night and the City, and Hotchacha.

I’m really excited to hear Night and the City again, after catching their excellent set opening for Nurse Beach at the Box a few weeks ago; they have a sort of 80’s college-radio / semi-British jangly, driving sound that gets excellently shoegazery in parts; their set was an awesome surprise, and I’m really psyched to hear them again.

I’m also intrigued by finally having the chance to hear ManorLady; I’ve been chatting with Aaron at like every show I’ve been to this summer, so it’s kind of embarrassing that I haven’t actually seen his band play yet. To be honest, I wasn’t all that crazy about their CD, but bands can often sound totally different live; he seems like he’s taking inspiration from a lot of my favorite bands/genres, and I’m told the live show often has an experimental video component as well, so it’s definitely something I’ve been eager to check out firsthand.

The third band on the bill is named Hotchacha; I don’t know much about them apart from the fact that their band name kind of sucks, but they seem like a cool garage-y rock thing that might make for a really fun show. So, that show’s at the Southern tonight; doors are at 8pm, and the cover charge is $7.

Earlier in the evening there’s a show at The Garage with David Shultz, known as the lead singer of Richmond’s David Shultz and the Skyline; he’s doing a solo tour of what Sam calls “strikingly honest folk songs” — local songwriter Chris Campanelli is the opener; seems like a good fit for The Garage. That one’s also supposed to start at 8pm (and it’s free), and since this is The Garage it’s much more likely that it will actually start at 8:00, so I’m assuming the Southern show will just be getting underway around the time the Garage gig wraps up, if you feel like trying to catch them both…

… oh, and the other piece of crazy news that’s been flying around this week is that Curt is back in town (still sporting his trademark beard, bicycle, and porkpie hat) and there’s rumors of an event going on at Dust! You guys remember Dust, of course… Charlottesville’s finest under-the-radar warehouse venue, which has now been dormant for well over a year, due to the proprietor’s departure. Anyhow, there was initially supposed to be a secret metal show there late last night, featuring the debut of “Coitus Interruptus,” a.k.a. Max Katz’s new metal band with Rick Easton and Jared Hood … BUT then the show got moved to tonight, and now Rick & Jared aren’t sure they can make it, so who knows if Max is going to be playing a solo set, or what. I asked Curt what the deal was, and he said he had basically just extended an open-mic invitation to the usual local metal-head performers, but there don’t seem to actually be any other acts booked on the bill (at least not from what I can tell), so who knows what’s actually happening…

Anyhow if you’re feeling adventurous or curious, it might be well worth swinging by Dust later this evening to see what’s up; if anyone has any info about this, please feel free to leave it in the comments (just don’t publicize the address, please…) Who knows if tonight will be any good, or whether it will actually even happen, BUT either way it’s good to see Curt again and I’m anticipating another totally bonkers html-formatted mass-email with animated dancing cat gifs to appear in my mailbox any day now.

Like most First Fridays, there is no shortage of things to do tonight. And everything starts rolling around 5PM as usual. Atypical, however, is a 5:00 show at the UVA amphitheater (which is right in front of Bryan Hall and next to the Cabell Hall end of the lawn). The show is a WTJU-sponsored back to school special featuring some of the finest acts in Charlottesville: Andrew Cedermark, The Invisible Hand, and Caninos. This is free, open to the public and–well, duh–not-to-be missed. Make sure to pop your collar and holler! It’s also a nice alternative to the insanity that is Fridays After Five at the Pavilion which tonight features the Beatles cover band Abbey Road.

While all the usual places are hosting art openings tonight, we’d like to spotlight this month’s show at The Bridge. “Site Singularity” by Suzanna Fields, J.T. Kirkland, and Sean Lundgren showcases installations specifically tailored to The Bridge’s gallery space. I’ll share with you that 400lbs of clay have been installed in the main gallery space alone. So check that out for sure, it’s guaranteed to sweep you off your feet. The opening is from 6-8PM.

In addition to the Glitch Mob show at The Jefferson tonight at 8PM mentioned below, there’s free late night music at 12th Street Taphouse. Corsair, Heavy Burner, and Gunchux together on one bill? Pretty sweet, count us in. Heavy Burner were well-received at The Box on Monday (which was also their first show.) If you missed them then, you should try to catch them tonight. The guitar solos are filthy nasty! If you’re already big on Corsair, chances are you’ll dig HB’s stuff pretty hard, too. We haven’t written much about Gunchux recently, so we’ll remind you it’s the project of The Nice Jenkin’s Rob Cheatham. That show should run from 10-2.

That house that keeps having house parties is having another one tonight; I don’t have too many of the details, but I know the line-up will include a K Records artist (whom I’ve never heard of) called Generifus, as well as the bands 1985 (who are not very easy to google), Wastelanders, and a “special guest” … doors are at 8:00, I believe the hosts are attempting to discourage the consumption of alcohol on the premises, and I have no idea what cover charge they’ll be asking for (although I hope they at least remember to collect one, this time). Sounds fun!

If anybody has any links for those other bands, or knows who the secret guest is, or has any other info, leave it in the comments! You can call any of us to ask for directions to the house, or better yet ask Dylan or Jack (it’s their house).

Exciting happenings tonight. Firstly, The Paramount ends its August series of iconic rock films with D.A. Pennebaker’s Don’t Look Back. The documentary focuses on Bob Dylan’s tour of the U.K. in the mid 60’s and has earned its place within the canon of American classics. That means don’t miss it! As a classic, it is widely referenced by other artists and my favorite is perhaps Weird Al’s “Bob.” So there’s that, too. Ticket’s are $6 and the film starts at 7:00.

Afterward and around the corner, you can catch a great night of awesome rock bands at The Box featuring Nurse Beach, Heavy Cream, and Heavy Burner. This will be the first show for Heavy Burner, a nasty new local band that promises 1970s style acid rock. Just what we’ve needed in town, right!? The band includes the drummer from Valkyrie and a couple of members from Unholy Four. They also act real wild. They’re joined by Nashville’s nearly all-girl garage band Heavy Cream. Heavy Cream just passed through a few weeks ago but we can’t get enough of them or their friends JEFF the Brotherhood and Natural Child, who have also played here, not to mention Turbo Fruits, who will play at the Tea House on 9/16. Heavy Cream played with Nurse Beach at their last show in town and those guys jumped at the chance to be paired with them again. We will speak not of ulterior motives. To be succinct, the staff here at Nailgun is really excited about Nurse Beach. I lack the genre vocabulary to appropriately classify them (nor am I at all interested in doing that) but I can tell you they seem to be Charlottesville’s version of Ultra Dolphins. Music starts at 10:30 and there’s no cover.

At 8:00PM, Blue Moon will host Driftwood and the Slaves, a pleasant folk band from Binghamton, New York. It’s free and early so that might be your best option if you can’t do the late night thing or spare the cash for the flick.

There’s an exciting bill at The Box tonight. Three bands, each of them delicious. I suppose the main attraction would be Missouri’s Viking Moses, who just can’t seem to avoid a Devendra Banhart or Jeff Mangum comparison. And that’s not a bad thing at all. The performance is notoriously impromptu, something we Charlottesvillians have appreciated in DBB Plays Cups’ shows. They’re joined by The Woolly Moon, a Baltimore band whom you might enjoy if you are a fan of Drakkar Sauna or Magnolia Electric Company. The final band on the bill, Morgan’s Orange, hail all the way from Seattle. Very pleasant stuff not unlike the other acts. I recommend you check it out. The music will start around 10:30 so come out! No cover.
